Also
known as “Más a Tierra” Island, Robinson Crusoe is
the closet to the continent, and the only one of the Juan Fernandez
Archipelago with a permanent human population. It owes its name to the
story of the shipwreck of Alexander Selkirk, immortalized in the famous
novel Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe.
The archipelago is situated to the West of the Humboldt Current, which
sweeps north along the coast of continental Chile, forming a natural
barrier to the migration of plants and animal from the Continent. As
a result, it has developed a unique highly endemic biotic community;
seventy percent of the plant species in this Island are endemic. There
are peaks rising 1500 meter above level sea, paths for walks and beautiful
beaches for swimming, fishing or scuba diving.
